How did you get your home based job?

When people ask me where I work and I tell them I work at home, they always ask how I got my job. I tell them I answered a job posting for home based work, went to an interview and got hired. I realized that answer really isn’t quite helpful for someone who also wants to have a home based work. So here’s full story.

First, I decided what kind of job I wanted. I realized I wanted to work as a flash designer/animator. I already know how to animate with flash but I know I needed to be better. So, I studied my ass off to learn Actionscript and flash animation for almost 2 months and then I created my online portfolio.

Then after finishing my portfolio I posted my resume on different job boards. I specifically looked for job ads that indicates that it is a telecommute\home based\online job. In my experience I get a lot of responses in posting and answering job ads from bestjobs.ph . One freelance work I currently have is from answering a job ad from bestjobs.ph. But for my current job I answered a job ad from manila craigslist. It was job ad was from a U.S based company looking for a flash animator to do flash lessons and games for an of e-learning site. It is designed to teach kids faster math. I got an email response the next day and scheduled the interview. On the interview I was asked if I will be able to create simple games for kids, at that point I didn’t have any experience with game creation, so I asked if he could give me a week to study it. He said yes and then he said I was hired. Of course I need to study my ass off again the next week to learn how to create a game. Thankfully I learned and still working for them at present.

Finding an online job wasn’t very easy, it involved a lot of hard work, specially at the beginning, during the part of studying Actionscript and building my portfolio and . But I guess it is to be expected because as I once read somewhere :

Nothing worthwhile comes easily. Work, continuous work and hard work, is the only way to accomplish results that last.
